Vilagudhu Thirai is the title of a music album for which music has been composed by Karthika Mahadev, a NRI from the U.S. The album, a music video, was released in Chennai on saturday,6th JUly 2013. Actor-director K. Bhagyaraj released the album which was accepted by music director Bharadwaj, UTV Dhananjayan, directors Perarasu and S.S. Kumaran, cinematographer Gopi.
Bhagyaraj, the great orator, was at work on that evening. During his elaborate speech, he recalled his days as music director. Lauding lyricist Murugan Manthiram’s assistant director dreams, Bhagyaraj said “It’s imperative for a director to have some kind of musical sense. Like my entry into politics, it was by sheer accident that I took to composing music for films.
“I became a music director out of my anger on isaignani Ilaiyaraaja. No, I wasn’t angry with his music but felt bad that I couldn’t take part in music discussions. I then got a harmonium and learnt properly as to how to play it. As days went past, I was able to make my own tunes playing the harmonium. Including Ilayaraja, many doubted whether the tunes were actually composed by me.
“Only when Ilayaraja came to know through lyricist Vaali that I could compose music on my own, we became friends again. Even Amitabh Ji couldn’t believe that I was capable of composing music. Once he visited me at AVM Studios and asked me to compose a tune right in front of him…I then brought my assistants to the place and composed the song Pachchai Malai Sami Onnu Uchi Mela… for the film Idhu Namma Aalu.
“Karthika deserves kudos of the highest order for making a Tamil music video and is also lucky to be having a hubby in the form of Mahadev. I wish Karthika all the success and would like her to score music for Tamil films too. I have already decided to make her a playback singer in my next film,” concluded Bhagyaraj
